This is the lovely 13th century church, on the main road, in the village of Long Compton.
It's very recognisable, as you drive past, with it's two story half-timbered lych gate.

It is said that St Augustine visited the village and preached at this site as early as the 6th century.

Played with this photo quite a bit; hope I haven't gone over the top!

Edit: Got rid of that really bad flat sky. This still isn't perfect but it's so much better for now.

Edit : Toned down the sky ( 28 02 2011 )

What the hell is the roof on the closer house made of??? I have never seen anything like that.

The small building used to be the end house of a row of small cottages, the rest were demolished. The roof was apparently restored by a past resident, Mr George Latham; it was given to the Church as a memorial to him by his wife, Marion, on 12th November 1964.
The roof is what's called 'thatched' (made of straw, water reed or other organic material); thatch has probably been used to cover roofs in Europe since at least the Neolithic period and it was the main method of roofing in England right up until the late 1800s when the commercial production of Welsh slate began.
There are still hundreds of cottages throughout Britain with thatched roofs and the trade of thatching is thriving because many owners want their roof replaced or renewed with the same method when they need repairing :)
