The roof is what's called 'thatched' (made of straw, water reed or other organic material); thatch has probably been used to cover roofs in Europe since at least the Neolithic period and it was the main method of roofing in England right up until the late 1800s when the commercial production of Welsh slate began.
There are still hundreds of cottages throughout Britain with thatched roofs and the trade of thatching is thriving because many owners want their roof replaced or renewed with the same method when they need repairing
